As a white person, I was born with natural privilege. Since I do, I'm going to lend my voice to help those without said privilege to be heard. Black Lives Matter! All lives matter, of course they do. But right now, not ALL lives are in danger. Yes, cops lives matter, I'm not saying those who are killing cops should be supported. Asian lives matter, obviously, but they aren't the ones currently being killed more often than not in police custody. White lives matter, but I don't have to worry about walking down the street and being stopped by a police officer because I matched a vague description of a suspicious prowler in the area. I can run down the street and not worry about being jumped and shot in broad daylight in the middle of the road while someone films it. I bet I could drag my screaming children down the street, them calling out "don't beat me!" and not worry for a second that someone is going to stop me thinking I'm abducting said children. When the same can be said about a person of color, that's when I will stop parading Black Lives Matter. And, honestly, I don't see that happening in my lifetime, unfortunately. When I can walk through a store and not see someone eyeing a black person suspiciously and not feel compelled to stand guard for that POC, that's when I will stop shouting from the rooftops of my social media pages that BLACK LIVES MATTER When a time comes that a man being pinned to the ground, handcuffed and BEGGING FOR AIR, is unheard of, and immediately punishable by the charge of murder, I will stop using my voice to speak for those who aren't being heard. When a man kneeling on someone's neck, refusing first aiders to check on the health of the one he's detained, threatening them as well, then I will stop. When a murderer is no longer allowed to go home, order take out, visit with family and friends, for four days before being CHARGED with MURDER, then I will stop.
Do I hate the crime, looting, burning of buildings going on right now? Sure do! I'm sure those who aren't being heard don't like it either. But I would take a burned building, a suffering business and chaos for a few days, if it meant the disregard for human life was reevaluated and the killing stopped. What happens when you aren't being heard? Do you sit down and let things continue? Or do you finally blow up and scream and shout about it? These feelings have been repressed for too long. Their mouths have been kept quiet when they should have been listened to. It's time. It's PAST time, for them to be heard. Riot. Go ahead and riot. Because, until the senseless killing stops, WE CAN'T BREATHE!
